Antalya region's geography

Situated in the Mediterranean coast the Antalya Gulf is roughly 20.815 square kilometers.
Over three quarters of the region is covered by mountainous terrain and some ten of these mountains are over 2.500 meters high with two exceeding 3.000 meters. About 60% of the region is covered with pine forest and Mediterranean plant life. The Antalya plains also offer fertile soil for agriculture. 290 kilomters of the 590 – kilometer coastline is natural beach. The Taurus mountains at 3.086 meters rise above the coastline. Large and small streams emerge from the west side of the mountains watering the plains on their journey to the Mediterranean. Plant life is is quite varied. Every kind of tropical plant can be found along the coast. The foothills of the mountains are covered in the typical Mediterranean marquis, while the forests are full of oaks and pine trees. The plains are coverd with cotton and sesame plantations along with citrus and banana groves.

Summer months are hot ( average 30 ) and rainless but very humid. Average regional temperature in January is 9, April 16, May 20 degrees celsius. It may rain but , on average there is no rain for 309 days out of the year.

Based on the findings and results of the archeological digs conducted in the area, it has been determined that this region was first inhabited some 50.000 years ago.
